Tis the season for stuffing ourselves full of those rich and tasty comfort foods.  Tis also the season for packing the pounds.  It is really easy to gain weight during the holidays, and it is not so easy to take lose it after the new year.  

Luckily, there are plenty of healthy tricks to behold for those of you seeking a more beneficial route to the holidays.  Use that beautiful kitchen you worked so hard to purchase, and open up your seasoning cabinets.  

Start mixing up some bold flavors with a few healthy recipes.  Here are a few comfort food recipes for winter that will not chunk you up over the holidays.

Spaghetti squash breakfast bake

Spaghetti squash is an excellent holiday mealtime treat, as it is in season during the winter months of the year.  This year, try halfing a few spaghetti squashes and filling them with tasty breakfast foods.  

Baking the spaghetti squash first to enhance its rich flavor, you can play around with the rest of the ingredients in this recipe.  Eggs, sausage pieces, bacon, cheese, chives, and whatever else you decide to put in your mix will taste delicious with the squash as its bowl.  

Italian bean balls on spaghetti squash noodles

Spaghetti squash noodles are another way to take advantage of the vegetable being in season.  Instead of risking your heart health with homemade sausage balls, try concocting some Italian bean balls for your topper.  

Use kidney beans, oats, and flax to form a delicious alternative to traditional meatballs.  You will feel much better after eating this meal, and you may even skip the after dinner coma.  

Vegan pot pies

Making a vegan pot pie is a matter of cutting a few veggies, mixing them all together, and transferring your mixture to a few large carafes.  If you choose, you can add a lean meat for protein, but the vegan recipe is a tad bit better for your health.  

Spaghetti squash lasagna boats

Again, there is a delicious use for the seasonal veggie.  Spaghetti squash makes a nutritional lasagna boat.  Just half the squash, remove the seeds, and bake it.  After you bake spaghetti squash, take a fork to the innards.  The meat of the squash will string out, making part of your filling.  

The add some veggie burger crumbles, tomato sauce, and ricotta cheese.  Toss your mixture back into the oven to broil for a few minutes, and viola.  Dinner is served.
